One has claimed that if it were not for Russell and his "crazy doomsday millennial prophecies", then there would be no Jehovah's Witnesses today.
1) Charles Taze Russell was not a prophet, and never gave any prophecies. The only prophecies he believed in were prophecies recorded in the Bible. ctr-rlbible.com/?page_id=3000
2) By saying that if it had not for been Russell's teachings, there would never have been any Jehovah's Witnesses, similarly one could say that if there never had been the teachings of Jesus, there never would have been all the atrocities committed "in the name of Jesus". Actually, it is only by denying the teachings of Jesus that the atrocities were done in the name of Jesus; likewise the formation of, and the subsequent teachings of the Jehovah's Witnesses came about by denying the basic teachings of Russell (not that Russell never made any errors, or that one should accept everything that Russell taught as being "from God"). ctr-rlbible.com/?p=65
3) Charles Taze Russell did preach, in harmony with the Bible, of a time of trouble and Armageddon that was to chastise the peoples of all nations (not eternally destroy them), after which all would be blessed by the Messianic Kingdom, including any all of the unregenerated who died during the time of trouble and/or during Armageddon. Although one could call this "doomsday", Brother Russell did not. He certainly never preached the doomsday teachings as the JWs teach. The JWs teach almost the opposite of Russell, claiming that one has to come to their organization for salvation, else he and his children will be eternally destroyed in Armageddon. ctr-rlbible.com/?cat=15
