I have been asked concerning John 4:14 and Revelation 21:6 regarding the living water(s).
John 4:10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."
John 4:11 The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. From where then have you that living water?
John 4:12 Are you greater than our father, Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, as did his sons, and his cattle?"
John 4:13 Jesus answered her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again,
John 4:14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life." -- World English.
Jesus, of course, was not speaking of physical water, but the woman's reply showed that she did not immediately understand that, for she said:
"Sir, give me this water, so that I don't get thirsty, neither come all the way here to draw." -- John 4:15.
Jesus did not repond directly to her misunderstanding; however, this does not mean that he agreed with the understanding she gave. The woman, however, knew of the promises concerning the Messiah, and was more than likely aware that it was foretold that the Messiah would speak the words of Jehovah. -- Deuteronomy 18:15-19.
John 7:37
Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!" -- World English.
It was necessary that the woman should appreciate the fact that she was a sinner and under the death sentence and needed the water of eternal life, which God alone could give (Jeremiah 2:13; 17:13), and which he has provided only by means of Jesus. In another place Jesus stated: "The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life." (John 6:63) Here Jesus uses the word "spirit" to mean power. And Jesus said, "He who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life." (John 5:24) This shows that the water he was offering were the words that he spoke, which words were not his own, but those of the only true God who had sent him. -- Deuteronomy 18:15-19; Isaiah 11:2; 61:1; John 3:34; 4:10,23,24; 5:19,38; 7:16,28; 8:26,28,38,42; 12:44-50; 17:1,3,14.
Anyone who hears the word of Jesus -- who is affected by the words of Jesus -- realizes his own short-comings, that he is a sinner in need of repentance and deliverance from his sin. Jesus therefore spoke of his then coming offering of himself for sin, all of which were part of the words that Jehovah, his God and Father had given to him.
He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give freely to him who is thirsty from the spring of the water of life."
Revelation 21:7 shows that this God, not Jesus, who is speaking. The only true God is the source; Jesus is the instrument. (1 Corinthians 8:6)
Revelation 21:6 prophetically speaks as though in the age to come, when the offering of life will be made to all who are now blinded by Satan. This is the coming time that Paul wrote of in Romans 8:21.
Romans 8:20 For the creation [the whole creation of mankind -- Romans 8:22] was subjected to futility [as a result of Adam's sin -- Romans 5:12-19], not willingly, but because of Him [Jehovah] who subjected it, in hope
Romans 8:21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. -- New American Standard.
Isaiah speaks of that day, saying:
And it shall be in the last days, the mountain of the house of Jehovah shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow into it. And many people shall go and say, Come and let us go up to the mount of Jehovah, to the house of the God of Jacob. And He will teach from His ways, and we will walk in His paths. For out of Zion the Law will go forth, and the Word of Jehovah from Jerusalem. And He shall judge among the nations and shall rebuke many people. And they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, nor shall they learn war any more. - (Isaiah 2:2-4, Green's Literal)
Of course, Jehovah does this work through His son, and also through the saints. As always, our Heavenly Father is the source; Jesus is the instrument. -- 1 Corinthians 8:6.
