Who is the man who made the earth tremble in Isaiah 14:16?
You shall take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, How has the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased! -- Isaiah 14:4, World English.
Directly, this refers to the King of Babylon (Isaiah 14:4); indirectly, the parable is using the King of Babylon to represent Satan. It is Satan who is the real king, the prince [ruler] of this world (John 16:11; Ephesians 2:2); Satan was once the anointed covering cherub in Eden (Ezekiel 28:13-15), holding a very high position. Satan fell from that high position, and Jesus described that fall as being like a falling star. (Luke 10:18) However, the time is coming when he will abyssed (Revelation 20:2,3), which is likened in Isaiah as being thrown into sheol (Isaiah 14:15). This is but a temporary condition, for he is released from this condition after the millennial reign of Jesus and the saints. While Satan is abyssed, the nations of the earth will no longer be blinded by his influence, and thus they are figuratively depicted as asking regarding Satan: "Is this the man who made the earth temble, who shook kingdoms", etc? -- Isaiah 14:16.
