We have been asked: "When do you consider Malachi 4:1 was referring to?"
By comparison of spiritual revealing with spiritual revealing, my conclusion is that the timing of Malachi 4:1,2 coincides with the time surrounding and including the thousand years and the little season after the thousand years have ended (of Revelation 20). It is that time described by the words in Genesis 3:15 (in the seed bruising the head of the serpent -- Romans 16:20); 28:14; Psalm 2:8-12; 72:2-19; 96:11-13; 98:7-9; 149:9; Daniel 7:18,22; Isaiah 2:2-4; 9:6,7; 11:1-9; 26:9,10; 32:1; Jeremiah 33:15; Ezekiel 16:55-63; Matthew 10:15; 11:22,24; 19:28; 25:31-46; Mark 6:11; Luke 1:31-33; 10:12,14; 22:30; John 5:28,29; 12:48; Acts 3:20,21; 17:31; Romans 2:16; 8:19,21; 1 Corinthians 4:5; 6:2; 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10; 2 Timothy 4:1; 2 Peter 3:7; Revelation 20:4,6-15) The sun of righteousness, representing the seed of woman (Genesis 3:15) -- the seed of Abraham (Galatians 3:16,29) -- cannot arise until God stops calling out from the nations a people from all nations to be of the seed of Abraham through faith in Jesus. Once the seed is completed, then Satan is abyssed (Revelation 20:3), and then the seed -- the children of God -- will be revealed to the whole groaning creation (Romans 8:19), so that the groaning creation "also" [in addition to the seed] will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the liberty of the glory of the children of God. -- Romans 8:21.
The seed of Abraham (the children of God of Romans 8:14-18) is contrasted with the whole creation of Romans 8:19-21. The children of God of Romans 8:14-18 are the seed of Abraham of Galatians 3:26,29, and the seed of the woman of Genesis 3:15; Revelation 12:1,17. The whole creation that is also to be delivered when the sons of God are revealed to them, then, corresponds not the seed of the Abraham, but to the nations that the seed of Abraham is to bless.
The sun of righteousness [the seed of Abraham] could be said to begin arising amidst the time of trouble at the end of the age; nevertheless, the sun [the seed -- both Jesus and the church -- of the woman] of righteousness cannot arise with the full shining upon the nations (Daniel 12:3; Matthew 13:43; 19:28) until after all whom God calls to be members of the the sun of righteousness is completed, and after Satan is abyssed. When the physical sun begins its “ascent”, the land is still in darkness for several hours before the sun actually appears; before the sun is actually seen we begin to first see some of rays from the sun extending from beyond the eastern horizon, and yet the western horizon may still be in total darkness. Gradually, the darkness begins to turn to light. Little by little, the sun arises until we can see the full glory of the sun on the horizon, yet to the west of us there may still be some darkness. The sun has to arise higher in the sky to dispel the darkness of the night all the way from east to west. Only when all darkness is gone (which would mean that Satan is abyssed) can the sun shine its glory fully upon the nations.

but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips shall he kill the wicked.
The Sun of Righteousness is to rule with a righteous rod of iron for a thousand years during which all mankind will be enlightened with truth. At the end of that time, those who prove themselves to be incorrigibly disobedient will be thrown into the symbolic lake of fire (representing the second death) from which there is no ransom provided. The righteous, however, are likened to a calf in a stall that grows, as they apply the knowledge that is revealed to them in that day.
