The question has been presented:
"Were the Jews right when they claimed Jesus was making himself equal with God?(by saying that God was his father John 5:18)"
The Jewish leaders had long been seeking to kill Jesus. Nevertheless, whatever "cause" they might have considered for killing him does not mean that their cause was the true reason. Jesus stated the real reason that they sought to kill him. John was simply relating the legal cause that the Jews had for building a case to kill Jesus.
The Bible states several times the real reasons that the Jews wished to kill him (Matthew 21:14,15,38-46; Mark 3:5,6; 11:17,18; 12:7-12; Luke 19:45-48; 20:14; John 8:37,38; 10:31,32; 11:45-57), but the Jews denied the real reasons and gave other alleged reasons or legal "cause" by which they sought to justify killing him by their law. In effect, the Jews' fabricated stance before the people was that Jesus was a false prophet worthy of death because he was a sinner man with a demon making himself out to be equal to God -- Matthew 9:34; 12:24; Mark 3:22; Luke 7:39; 11:15; 15:2; 19:17; John 5:18; 7:20; 8:40,48; 9:16,24; 10:33.
If Jesus had been actually claiming to be equal to his God, then that would mean that he was claiming that there are two Gods -- two Supreme Beings, one God that is equal to another God.

For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. -- John 5:18, New American Standard.
