John 3:16-17 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. -- King James Version.
One has presented a graphic stating "Jesus Taught Trinity", followed by a quote from John 3:16. Evidently, it is thought that John 3:16 shows that Jesus taught the trinity doctrine.
Of course, there is definitely nothing in the above verses that presents Jehovah as being more than one person, or that presents Him as three persons, or that presents Jesus as being a person of Jehovah.
The reality is that "God" in John 3:16 refers to only one person. This one person gave his only begotten Son. Verse 17 shows that "God" is one person who "sent" his Son into the world. This "one person" who is "God" in these verses? Jesus spoke his Father as the "only true God [Supreme Mighty One]" who sent him. In Isaiah 61:1,2, the Messiah prophetically refers to one person whom he speaks of as "our God [ELOHIM]." That one person is "the Lord Jehovah" who anointed and sent the Messiah. This Jehovah is the same one person who is Jehovah who spoke through His prophet Moses about raising up a prophet like Moses. (Hebrews 1:1; Deuteronomy 18:15-19) This one person is referred to as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who raised up Jesus as his servant in Acts 3:13-26.
Rather than presenting God as more than one person, John 3:16,17 presents God as only one person, and his Son is distinguished from being God who sent and gave His Son. The only way one could possibly see a triune God in these verses is by creating assumptions beyond what is stated, and then adding those assumptions to and reading those assumptions into what is stated.
