The claim is made, evidently thought to support the trinity doctine, that Jehovah (Yahweh) is three persons:
There are various renderings of the above, with differing punctuation applied. My own synopsis:
Zechariah 2:8 {The angel speaks} For this is what Jehovah of hosts says {the angel interjects:}(for glory he [Jehovah] has sent me {the angel} to the nations which plunder you, for he who touches you [Israel, type of the church} touches the apple of his eye):
Zechariah 2:9 {the angel then begins to tell what Jehovah says} "Behold, I will shake my hand against them, and they will become spoil for their servants." {The angel then speaks} Then you will know that Jehovah of hosts has sent me {the angel, evidently as speaking typically as the Messiah}.
Zechariah 2:10 {The angel quotes Jehovah} "Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst," says Jehovah.
Zechariah 2:11 {The angel speaks} Many nations will be joined to Jehovah in that day, and they will become my people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that Jehovah of hosts has sent me to you.
The ancient Hebrew had no punctuation. Biblical prophecies and psalms may jump back and forth between speakers and the writer, etc., often without a direct statement that such is being done. In this case, Zechariah is evidently quoting one of the angels of Jehovah (Zechariah 2:3), who in turn quotes Jehovah. Part of what is being stated is directly what Jehovah said, and part is what the angel himself says. I do believe that the angel whom Jehovah sent represents the Messiah. Both Jesus and his God reside with those who believe. -- John 14:23.
The sheep of Jesus are given to him from the one person who is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Jehovah is the Most High Shepherd; Jesus is the "genuine" (Greek, transliterated, Kalos, Strong's #2570) shepherd appointed over the sheep by the Most High Shepherd, as opposed to the false shepherds. The Most High Shepherd Jehovah judges His sheep through, by means of the genuine shepherd whom he has appointed. -- Psalm 23:1; 96:13; 98:9; Ezekiel 34:2-24; John 5:22,23; 10:11-17,29; Acts 10:42; 17:31; Romans 2:16; 14:10; 1 Corinthians 4:5; 2 Corinthians 5:10.
According to Jehovah's oath-bound promise, Abraham's seed, that is, Christ and all the "sons of God" of this age, will bless "all nations," "all the families of the earth." This blessing will come to the world during the 1,000-year reign, when Satan will not be allowed to deceive the nations, and all nations will learn Jehovah's ways. -- Genesis 12:3; 22:16-18; Isaiah 2:2-4; Galatians 3:7-9,16,29; Hebrews 6:13-20; Acts 3:19-25; Revelation 20:3.
The reality is that IF Jehovah sent Jehovah, this would actually mean that there are two Jehovah's, one Jehovah who sends another Jehovah. This would in be in contradiction to Deuteronomy 6:4.
Jehovah, of course, certainly dwells with his people through the one whom he sent. (Acts 10:38) This does not mean that we need to imagine and assume that Jesus is a person of Jehovah who sent him.
There is definitely nothing in Zechariah that says that Jehovah is more than one person, or that Jesus is Jehovah. The default reasoning is not to imagine, assume, add to, and read into the scriptures that Jehovah is more than one person, that he is three persons, and that Jesus is a person of Jehovah. The default reasoning should be that since Jehovah is the God of Jesus (Micah 5:4), then Jesus is not Jehovah. All scriptures can be seen to be in harmony with this default reasoning. If one assumes that the default is that Jehovah is three persons, one may be blinded to the truth related to many scriptures, including the scriptural basis of the atonement.
Nothing in what is stated in Zechariah 2, however, means that one needs to imagine and assume that Jesus is Jehovah, and that Jehovah is more than one person, and that Jesus is one of the persons of the Jehovah, etc. It certainly says nothing there to the effect that Jesus, by his words recorded in Matthew 28:20, was claiming to be Jehovah, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
