The meaning of the name Immanuel, "God with us", speaks of God, not the bearer of the name. This if often true of Hebrew names. For example, when Abraham called the place where he sacrificed the ram “Jehovah-jireh”, meaning “Jehovah will provide” (Genesis 22:14), was he saying that the place was Jehovah Himself?
Jesus came to declare the only true God. (John 1:18; 17:1,3,25,26; 1 John 5:20) Jesus came to offer his unblemished flesh in sacrifice to the only true God for the sin of the world, thus providing for reconciliation between God and man. (John 1:29; 3:16,17; 6:51; Romans 5:10,12-19; 1 Corinthians 15:21,22; 2 Corinthians 5:18,19; Ephesians 5:2; Colossians 1:20-22; 1 Timothy 2:5,6; Hebrews 9:14; 10:10; 1 John 2:2; 4:14; Thus, through Jesus, God is indeed with His people.

The name Immanuel is indeed a most interesting one , however, the wording "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." (Matthew 1:23) is often misunderstood due to the old English term used.
Often individuals championing a particular cause, when learning that the King is also in agreement; would cry: " The King is with us." even though he was still miles away in London. Therefore the more accurate phrase for Immanuel would be 'God is for us.' meaning that at last, God has turned his attention to mankind and provided a Messiah.
