This scripture is often quoted as associated with various forms of cursing and/or swearing. Directly, however, it is not speaking of swearing, or cursing. Directly, it is referring to taking up the name Jehovah as being in covenant relationship with Jehovah. Here and elsewhere Jehovah shows the importance of not taking up his name for any worthless purpose. The nation of Israel, by covenant, had taken the name of Jehovah upon themselves, and had agreed to keep the commandments within that covenant. The covenant itself outlined the curses that would come upon the children of Israel if they did not obey their covenant with Jehovah.
