Main Entry: cult
Function: noun
Etymology: French & Latin; French culte, from Latin cultus care, adoration,
from colere to cultivate -- more at WHEEL
Date: 1617
Usage: often attributive
1 : formal religious veneration : WORSHIP
2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents
3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of
adherents
4 : a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its
promulgator
5 a : great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film
or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual
fad b : a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion
The basic meaning of the word "cult" is "worship."
Definition #1 certainly applies to true Christians, as they do believe in
worshiping Almighty God. This is in agreement with Jesus also.
Accepting the definition of religion as a form of worship, definition #2
also applies, as true Christians adhere to the Bible for guidance in
religious beliefs, ritual, etc. Likewise, Jesus advocated a form of worship,
worship in spirit and truth.
Definition #3 would apply, as it could apply to any religious group, for I
suppose that every religious group has some other religious group that
regards them as unorthodox or spurious. It would certainly apply to the
teachings of Jesus, as the Jewish 'orthodoxy' of that time wanted to kill
him for what he believed.
Definition #4 applies, as truth Christians believe that God through Christ and
church will heal all the nations as set forth in the Bible. (Bible
Students as a group do not believe that this is the mission of the church in this
age.) This Jesus also believed.
Definition #5 applies, as true Christians believe in great devotion to God
through Jesus. Jesus definitely advocated devotion to himself and obedience
to his commands.
So I guess from the above you can say the true Christianity well as
the teachings of Jesus are a cult. I, myself, am happy to belong to the "Jesus" cult.
